Plenty of offices have quietly banned AI tools because nobody could answer one question: where does the text go after you paste it? This is the version of AI where that question has a boring answer.
Your data never leaves the building.
The core of this service is a machine on your network that runs a language model locally. Your team uses it the way they would use a chat tool, except the prompts, the documents, and the answers all stay on equipment you own. Point it at your own files and it can answer questions about them: policies, contracts, intake forms, past correspondence, whatever the work actually runs on.
That matters most where the data is regulated or genuinely confidential. A dental office, a small law firm, and a financial advisor all have the same problem: the tool would help, but the data cannot go into a public model. Keeping it local takes that objection off the table for the workflows it covers.
The same hardware can double as a Plex or Jellyfin media server if you want it to. Most business clients care more about the AI side, but the box is capable of both and it is a nice bonus for a home office.

Getting a model running is a weekend. Keeping one useful is a job.
Downloading a local model and getting a first response out of it is genuinely easy now. That is the demo. The real work starts after: making it fast enough that people use it instead of going back to their phone, making it safe enough to expose to a whole team, and keeping it maintainable as models get replaced every few months and the one you installed stops being the right one.
A badly secured self-hosted setup is worse than not having one. The whole reason to run it yourself is control, and a machine that is reachable from the open internet with no authentication in front of it hands that control away while giving you the confidence that you have not. That failure mode is common enough that we wrote about what happens when a self-hosted model is left unsecured.
We will also tell you when this is the wrong answer for you. Private AI is not automatically better, it is different, and for some businesses a cloud model under the right agreement is the smarter call. Dental and medical offices, law firms, accountants, and financial advisors run into the same wall. The staff can see exactly where AI would save hours, and the data those hours live in is the data they are least able to send anywhere. Private AI is aimed squarely at that gap. It also fits businesses with no regulator at all who simply do not want their pricing models, client lists, or unreleased work sitting in someone else's system. That instinct is reasonable and it is a fine reason to build this.

What does private AI or self-hosted AI actually mean? +
It means the model runs on hardware you own and control, in your office or your home, instead of on a vendor server somewhere else. You type a question, the machine on your network answers it, and nothing leaves your equipment. No prompt logs on an account you do not control, no terms of service that can change next quarter, no third party deciding what happens to the text you paste in.
Is a local model as good as ChatGPT? +
Honest answer: for a lot of everyday business work, yes. Summarizing a long document, drafting a first pass at a letter, pulling answers out of your own files, cleaning up notes, classifying inbound messages. For the hardest reasoning, the newest capabilities, and the biggest context windows, the frontier cloud models are still ahead and will likely stay ahead. The tradeoff you are buying is privacy and control, not raw benchmark scores. We will tell you on the call which of your tasks a local model handles well and which ones it does not.
Does this help with HIPAA or client-confidentiality concerns? +
It removes one category of exposure, which is real but partial. If patient or client data never leaves hardware you control, you are not relying on a vendor Business Associate Agreement or a cloud provider retention policy for that particular workflow. That is meaningful. It is not the whole picture. Compliance depends on your entire environment: access control, encryption, backups, staff training, audit logging, physical security, and your own written policies. No single product choice makes a practice compliant, and we will not tell you otherwise. Bring your compliance advisor into the conversation and we will build to what they need.
What hardware do I need to run this? +
It depends on what you want it to do. A single owner running document chat over a few hundred files is a different machine than a ten-person office hitting the model all day. Sometimes existing hardware is enough, sometimes it is not, and sometimes the honest answer is that a cloud model with the right contract fits you better. Can a whole team use it, or just one person? +
A team can. That is usually the point. One shared machine on the network can serve the whole office, with access controlled per person and remote access handled over a VPN rather than an open port. Serving several people at once is the part that changes the requirements the most, so it is worth saying up front on the call how many people will actually use it and how often.
