We start with what you want the thing to do. Files and backups for the whole house. A media library that plays anywhere. Self-hosted apps instead of another monthly subscription. A private cloud your team can reach without handing data to a third party. The goals decide the hardware, not the other way around.
From there it is planning, build, and configuration: what to buy or reuse, how the network is laid out, which operating system fits how you actually work, how services run in containers so one change does not take everything down, and how you reach it safely from outside the house.
At handover you get a walkthrough of what is running and why. Not a printed manual you never open. An actual conversation about your machine, so the next change is something you can make.

Buying the hardware is the easy part.
Anyone can put parts in a case. The hard part is sizing the machine to what you genuinely want to run, now and in about two years. Undersize it and you rebuild in six months. Oversize it and you pay for capacity and power draw you never touch. That call depends on your actual workload, and most build advice online is written for someone else's workload.
Then there is the layer nobody enjoys: the network and the security around it. A server that holds your files and is reachable from the internet is a real target, and the default settings on most software are convenient rather than safe. Getting remote access right, keeping the lab separated from the rest of your network, and knowing what should never be exposed at all is the difference between a useful machine and a liability. The last part is keeping it maintainable. A homelab that only its builder can touch stops being infrastructure and becomes a fragile pet project, and it usually breaks on the weekend you needed it. Updates, backups that are actually tested, and a layout you can reason about six months later matter more than any single spec. What is a homelab, and who is it actually for? +
A homelab is server hardware you own and run yourself, at home or in your office, instead of renting the same capability from a cloud provider. People build them to hold their own files, run a media library, host their own apps, or keep private data off someone else's platform. It suits anyone who wants control over where their data lives and is willing to own a small piece of infrastructure.
Do I need to be technical to have one? +
No. That is the whole point of the engagement. We do the planning and the build, then walk you through what is running, why it is set up that way, and what to do when something needs attention. You end up understanding your own setup rather than owning a black box you are afraid to touch.
How much does a homelab build cost? +
It depends entirely on what you want to run and how much hardware the plan calls for. A small always-on box for files and a couple of services is a different conversation than a machine sized for local AI inference. Should I buy new hardware or reuse what I already have? +
Both are fair game. Plenty of good homelabs start with a retired desktop, a spare drive, and a plan. Others need new hardware because the goal genuinely demands it. We look at what you already own first, then plan to your budget and tell you honestly where spending money is worth it and where it is not.
Is this for a home or for a business? +
Both, and the difference matters. A home setup is usually about control, privacy, and cost. A business setup adds real security and continuity requirements: who can reach what, how access is separated from the rest of the network, how backups are handled, and what happens when the person who set it up is on vacation. We plan for the one you actually are.
